Tate joins the charity from the National Osteoporosis Society, where she was director of fundraising. She has been working in the sector for 30 years, at charities including Macmillan Cancer Support, Save the Children, the RNLI and animal charity PDSA. She said she was joining Hope and Homes for Children, which helps impoverished children find homes, at "an extremely progressive and ambitious period in its 15-year history".

Tate added: "Through its varied and tailored programmes - from closing orphanages in Europe to supporting Aids orphans in Africa - Hope and Homes for Children has become a world leader in its field."

Hope and Homes for Children has also appointed Wayne Cornish as head of its new press office. A former journalist, he has also worked as a member of Cancer Research UK's press and PR team.
