Barnardo’s has appointed the deputy chief executive of Kensington & Chelsea Council as its new head.

Anne Marie Carrie, who is also the local authority’s executive director for family and children’s services, will join the charity in November before taking over from Martin Narey, Barnardo’s current chief executive, in early 2011.

Carrie, a former youth worker who started her professional life as an electrical engineer, also worked as regional director of local government at the former Office of the Deputy Prime Minister.

In a statement, Carrie said she shared the charity’s "lifelong commitment to and passion for improving the lives of children, especially the most vulnerable.

"Barnardo’s believes in children and I believe in Barnardo's."
