Format and audience

The Disabilities Trust offers support for people with complex needs. The report's prime target audience is the charity's supporters. Along with website and media activity, the report is regarded as a key way of thanking those people who have donated and bringing them up to date with the trust's activities. It is used to introduce the charity when applying for grants, forms part of the charity's marketing activity and informs families and friends of service users about aspects of the trust with which they might not be familiar.

Design and content

The report is bold and simple, using case studies to illustrate the trust's work. Staff and service users helped to identify case studies, which showcase the aspirations and achievements of the person concerned and the role that the expertise of the trust has played. Handwriting-style graphics are used to differentiate case studies. The review has also been published in a page-turning format on the digital platform

Cost and practicality

Stock photographs were used to illustrate the case studies because the trust had found in previous years that specially taken professional photographs of the people concerned had added significantly to the time and costs. The costs were for printing the report.

The Disabilities Trust says:

"Each year there is a theme for the review, which we try to tie in with issues about disability. The theme for the 2012/13 edition is independence. We sought to demonstrate our determination to enable all those we support to maintain and enhance their independence. For example, Stephen is deaf-blind and has autism, but, with structured support, he can access the community safely and independently."
