Armed forces charity appeals against appointment of interim manager

The Charity Commission opened a statutory inquiry into Support the Heroes after a BBC documentary allegedly showed the charity's fundraisers falsely claiming they worked for free

An armed forces charity has appealed to the charity tribunal against the appointment of an interim manager to take over the running of the organisation.

The Charity Commission opened an inquiry into Support the Heroes in November after a BBC documentary, The Great Military Charity Scandal, allegedly showed the charity’s fundraisers falsely claiming they worked for free.

As part of the inquiry, the commission ordered the charity to cease all fundraising activity until further notice, froze the charity’s assets and appointed an interim manager.

The charity, which currently has two trustees listed on the register of charities, has appealed against the appointment of the interim manager.

A commission spokesman said: "The commission appointed an interim manager to the charity on 9 December 2016 to the exclusion of the charity’s trustees.

"The commission met the charity trustees on 11 January 2017 and is currently reviewing the order that appoints the interim manager based on information obtained at that meeting."

He said the commission could not comment further while litigation was ongoing but expected to publish a further statement on the inquiry shortly.

Support the Heroes raises funds to pass to other charities that treat veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder. It had an income of £119,473 in the year to the end of March.

The commission has until 5pm on 10 February to file its response to the appeal at the tribunal, according to court documents.

Third Sector was unable to reach anyone from the charity for comment.
