Arts and sports charities attract fewer donors than other organisations, research finds

A Big Give poll of 2,000 people finds that, in contrast, charities helping animals or children, and those that pursue medical research, all enjoyed support from more than a third of people in the past year

Arts and sports charities have attracted fewer donors than other parts of the sector over the past 12 months, new polling indicates.

The data, released today to tie in with Giving Tuesday, showed that the most popular charities for donations were those working with animals and children, and those conducting medical research.

The polling, carried out last month with 2,000 adults by the company One Poll on behalf of The Big Give, found that 6 per cent of the public said they supported sports and recreation charities over the previous year.

Just under 7 per cent said they had supported arts organisations.

By comparison, charities that help animals or children, or pursue medical research, had all enjoyed support from more than a third of the public, researchers found.

The polling showed that more than 70 per cent of the public believed it was important to give to charity, and 65 per cent said they wished they could afford to give more.

The research showed that 36 per cent of people said they felt good when they gave money to charity, and 62 per cent said they would be more likely to give if they knew that their donations would be matched.

Twenty-three per cent of respondents said they planned to donate to food banks this Christmas.

But nearly a quarter of those polled said they had no plans to do anything charitable during the festive period.

The research found that people were likely to organise their charitable giving around a small number of organisations, with 40 per cent saying they would donate to two or three charities. Slightly more than 1 per cent said they would donate to nine or more charities.

The data was released as part of The Big Give’s Christmas Challenge, through which it aims to raise £14m for nearly 600 charities by working with philanthropists who will match-fund individual donations.

Jonathan Frank, director of The Big Give, said: "Our research confirms that the public recognises the key role charities play in our society and how important it is to give back.

"Christmas is traditionally a time for giving, when people are known for their generosity and thoughtfulness towards families, friends and charities alike."
