The best shop by miles

The village of Berrynarbor, North Devon, is celebrating after winning the Plunkett Foundation's award for best village shop and post office in south-west England this month.

The shop is one of more than 190 across the country owned by the community it serves. According to the foundation, the number is growing by about 20 each year.

Under its Village Core Programme, the foundation assists rural communities wanting to set up and run community-owned shops and other retail social enterprises with financial start-up packages and advisory support.
