Bestselling assistance

Novelist Alexander McCall Smith has become the latest celebrity supporter of Transaid, the charity that seeks to improve transport management in the developing world. The author has spent weeks at the top of both the UK and the US bestselling lists, with his No 1 Ladies' Detective Agency novel series, set in Botswana, which features the sleuth Precious Ramotswe. But it is another character, JLB Matekoni, the mechanic who owns Tlokweng Road Speedy Motors, that prompted the charity - which facilitates the delivery of vaccines and food aid - to approach McCall Smith. "Transaid is an organisation that makes their slogan 'transport for life' a reality, and I'm sure both Precious Ramotswe and Mr JLB Matekoni would be pleased to have their names associated with them," said the author.
