Bid for date with Bird

John Bird, founder of The Big Issue, is among the celebrity dates available to the highest bidders in an online auction that will benefit Samaritans.

Liaisons with Miss Great Britain finalist Racheal Baughan and stars of the TV show Shipwrecked, including Ben Lunt, Lianne Dauban, Louis Rennocks, Sophia Wardman and Naomi Millbank-Smith, are also on offer in the eBay auction.

Claire Duncan, a spokeswoman for Samaritans, said the auction was proving popular. “We launched the 24:7 auction to raise awareness that Samaritans is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week,” she said. “This is the first time we’ve done a celebrity date auction and we hope it will bring in lots of money.”

The auction is still live and ends on 24 July, which is Samaritans 24:7 national fundraising and awareness day.

Other items being auctioned include a shirt autographed by Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech, boxing gloves signed by WBO and IBF super middleweight champion Joe Calzaghe and merchandise from musician Jamie Cullum.

For those potential winners looking for tips on how to impress their celebrity dates, Dauban fancies edgy boys in skinny jeans, and fellow Shipwrecked star Ben Lunt hates theatre and likes to show off his sporty side to impress nice girls.

The auctions can be found at www.samaritans.org/link/ebayauction.html.
