The Big Society Network, a project co-founded by the government’s big society adviser, Nat Wei, to encourage volunteering and local community action, has announced that the Asda Foundation will be its official partner and will fund its biggest project.
The project, called Your Square Mile, will encourage people to volunteer locally by publicising volunteering opportunities, giving advice to local groups and offering liability insurance for groups organising community-based events.
The partnership was announced at a fringe event at the Conservative Party conference in Birmingham. Speaking at the conference, Wei said Asda’s corporate social responsibility programme epitomised the government’s big society ethos.
A spokeswoman for the Asda Foundation said she was unable to confirm how much money it was providing.
