This digitally enhanced image of a tick has been released to tie in with Tick Bite Prevention Week, which runs until 17 April and is organised by the tick-borne disease charity Bada-UK.

The annual event promotes awareness of tick-borne diseases in humans, such as Lyme disease – which can cause serious illness – and educates people about preventive measures.

The European castor bean tick, pictured, is 11mm long when engorged with blood and typically feeds on large animals, including horses, deer and sheep.
