Bitter aftertaste to fair trade film

The Day Chocolate Company has accused education charity Worldwrite of manipulating the facts in a film about fair trade.

The company agreed to take part in The Bitter Aftertaste, which was screened at the Raindance film festival (Third Sector, 12 October), on the understanding that it would be balanced. But it said it was "disappointed" with the results.

A spokeswoman said: "The Bitter Aftertaste is poorly made and wilfully misrepresentative. It exploits both our goodwill and that of the Ghanaian cocoa farmers it features, who believed they were promoting fair trade."

A spokeswoman for the Fairtrade Foundation agreed. "We would advocate great caution to anyone thinking about using this film," she said.
