Emma De Vita reviews the new book by Georg Vielmetter and Yvonne Sell, which predicts the challenges managers will face in the next 20 years

Good managers need to stay ahead of the pack, aware of the trends that lurk around the next corner so that they can meet future challenges head-on. Who can help them? Management consultants and business school researchers, usually, who will attempt to predict the future, with varying success (the Millennium Bug, anyone?).

Leadership 2030 by Georg Vielmetter and Yvonne Sell, directors at the consultancy the Hay Group, have pinpointed six converging megatrends they claim will reshape the organisational landscape in the next 20 years. Some are obvious, such as increasing globalisation, environmental concerns and demographic change; others are less so.

One is what they call "individualisation and value pluralism" - essentially, treating each customer and employee as individuals with unique needs. Out of the window goes blind loyalty to your brand - you will need to win their affections daily. "Attuned leaders," write Vielmetter and Sell, "will create opportunities for customised offerings and build enduring relationships with diverse employees." This means having more flexibility and sensitivity to both your markets and workforces than ever before. Are you up to the task? Are you a future leader?
