Brankin takes on ministerial role

Rhona Brankin, Labour MSP for Midlothian, has been named Scotland's new communities minister.

She replaces Malcolm Chisholm, who was forced to resign in December after voting against the Trident replacement plans.

Scottish First Minister Jack McConnell said Brankin needed to address a number of voluntary sector issues. "She will need to demonstrate strong leadership for the Scottish Executive on equality, racism and the range of voluntary sector issues," he said. "I am keen for her to continue with our strong engagement with faith communities."
