Can Breakthrough to invest in Speaking Up

The Can Breakthrough social investment fund has announced its sixth investment - £175,000 in disability advocacy service Speaking Up.

Breakthrough, which is run by social enterprise Can with private equity firms SVG and Permira, provides capital funds and high-level business management for scaleable social enterprises.

Craig Dearden-Philips, chief executive of Speaking Up, said his organisation would use the investment to build capacity to provide more one-to-one advocacy for people with physical and mental disabilities in the east midlands, Yorkshire and Humberside and eastern regions.

Adele Blakebrough, chief executive of Can and chair of the Breakthrough Advisory Panel, said: "Breakthrough is delighted to be supporting Speaking Up, already one of the UK's largest providers of advocacy work.

"The social enterprise possesses a sound track record of growth, impact and innovation to achieve sustained social change, exactly the reasons why the Breakthrough fund exists."
