How does it support charities?
The bakery retailer has put social responsibility at the heart of its business since the 1960s and now supports charities in three main ways: raising money for the Greggs Foundation, supporting other charity initiatives and giving staff time off to volunteer.
What resources does it put in?
The chief executive of Greggs, Roger Whiteside, oversees the delivery of its social responsibility work and the main board is ultimately accountable for performance. A steering group, which meets four times a year, implements and reviews its CSR performance. Four senior managers act as trustees for the Greggs Foundation. Staff at every level of the company have the opportunity to engage in charitable activities.
How much money and staff time does it give?
Greggs will raise about £1.1m for the Greggs Foundation in 2015, of which £650,000 will come from its pre-tax profits and £450,000 from fundraising in its shops. Last year, the firm raised more than £1m for other national charity initiatives, including £865,000 for BBC Children in Need, £170,000 for the Poppy Appeal and £71,000 for the Ebola Crisis Appeal. Staff are also encouraged to use one working day a year to volunteer at local community organisations or charities. Last year, more than 500 volunteering days were completed by Greggs employees from all levels of the business. Greggs runs an employability programme called Fresh Start, which provided 376 opportunities in 2014 for people from marginalised groups.
What did the judges say?
Deborah Fairclough, head of research at the Charities Aid Foundation, said: "What sets Greggs apart is the proactive approach it takes to staff time, such as offering staff paid volunteering days."
