What is the partnership?
Property developer the Berkeley Group joined youth charity The Change Foundation to deliver Street Elite, a programme using sport to motivate young people into employment, education or training. Street Elite supports hard-to-reach young people considered likely to get involved with gangs or crime by providing a combination of sport and intensive long-term mentoring.
What did the company do?
The Berkeley Group is investing more than half a million pounds in the programme over five years, as well as providing guaranteed work placements for young people who take part. It provides business support including advice on capacity building and marketing. The company promotes Street Elite through a website and hosts three annual conferences to showcase the programme. Berkeley also uses its links with councils to help develop new partnerships for additional funding and placements. Last year, this resulted in new partnerships with Ealing and Southwark councils in London.
Why did it win?
Street Elite has so far helped to provide training and support to 168 young people. In 2015, 60 per cent of participants had come from a criminal background and 57 per cent were gang affiliated. Over the past four years, nearly 80 per cent of participants successfully moved into education or employment after nine months.
