What was the partnership?

Recognising that 75 per cent of adults with life-long mental health conditions first experience symptoms before the age of 18, the transport network FirstGroup partnered with Action for Children for three years to support the mental health of young people around the UK.

What did it do?

The commercial partnership has funded essential mental health support for disadvantaged children, young people and families across the UK. It funds a mental health practitioner who provides a lifeline to children and their families who are struggling with mental health challenges. It also delivers Friends, an early intervention and prevention programme that builds mental health resilience in children aged from four to 11. FirstGroup employees have fundraised for Action for Children and the organisation has offered additional value to the charity’s work through non-financial support, including pro-bono work and advertising across its bus and rail networks.

Why did it win?

Less than two years into the partnership, FirstGroup has hit £1.9m in employee fundraising, corporate donations and the commercial value of gifts in kind, making it the organisation’s most successful partnership to date in terms of value. Thanks to the organisation’s support, 500 hours of mental health interventions have been delivered to date and almost 250 Action for Children staff have been upskilled with mental health training. In 2020, the partnership expects to reach 3,500 primary schoolchildren through the delivery of the Friends programme.

What did the judges say?

Iyabo Oba, head of business development at EvoSoc, said it was brilliant to witness the successes of the partnership over the two-year period and the wholehearted involvement of senior leadership throughout. “Inspired use of FirstGroup advertising within its transport networks to publicise and focus on the work of Action for Children,” she added, “and great that it has also focused on qualitative and quantitative data to help with the storytelling of the partnership.”
