Business Charity Awards: Charity Partnership, Utilities and Services – Age UK with e.on for Warm Homes

What was the partnership?

Age UK and E.on’s Warm Homes programme is Age UK’s longest-standing strategic partnership, working to support the UK’s older population, who are most vulnerable to fuel poverty and cold-related deaths around the country.

What did it do?

Age UK and e.on partnered in 2011 with the aim of supporting the company’s energy customersf who were most vulnerable to food poverty in the UK, a significant proportion of which were older people. The partnership supports older energy customers in three core ways: helping older people with benefit entitlement checks and raising their awareness of energy efficiency around their houses; providing energy information and advice to reduce energy waste; and supporting older people to feel financially secure and socially prepared for the winter months.

Why did it win?

E.on has invested £14.6m in the project since 2011 and the charity says that in the nine years since the partnership was launched more than 135,000 vulnerable older people have been supported with life-changing interventions.

The partnership has delivered more than 149,000 benefit entitlement checks, with 68 per cent of older people surveyed in 2018/19 saying they had fewer money worries as a result. It identified £232.3m in unclaimed benefits, equating to an average increase of more than £2,420 to each older person’s income for the rest of their lives.

E.on has also installed more than 166,000 items of energy efficiency equipment and achieved a total of more than £1.18m in fuel bill savings. Each of the 135,370 older people experienced an intensive intervention and meaningful interaction with Age UK.

What did the judges say?

Jessica Hughes, community investment manager at Southern Co-Op, congratulated Age UK and E.on on a “fantastic long-standing partnership”.

She said: “This shows that a long-term commitment allows programmes to grow and flourish to achieve some amazing results. There is great impact measurement and mutual commitment, with dedicated resource ensuring consistent delivery. A very solid partnership programme.”
