Former CND activist McMaster is stepping down after three years at the helm of the foundation, which promotes campaigning.

Butcher joins after seven years as chief executive of anti-poverty charity Off the Streets and into Work. She worked for homelessness charity St Mungos from 1992 to 2001.

Butcher said: "The Sheila McKechnie Foundation has an amazing track record for such a young charity, and I am delighted to be here."

McMaster plans to take a break before considering a new role.
