Buy-and-sell app Buengo launches with virtual features

First launched last May for Manchester, the app centres on London and allows charities to post virtual items for sale

A buy-and-sell app that allows users to sell the things they no longer need and donate the proceeds to charity has launched a new "virtual items" feature.

The Buengo app was launched in May, with the main focus on Manchester charities. This nexr stage centres on London and enables charities to post virtual items for sale in the app, with users buying them in the same way that they would make donations. For example, the homelessness charity HelpHomelessHeroes is is selling virtual sleeping bags and toiletry packs through the app and will use the money raised to provide these items to beneficiaries.

Charities can sign up to the app for free on the Buengo website, allowing users to donate proceeds from their items to their charities. Several London charities have already registered, including King’s College Hospital Charity, Camden Giving, Action Against Hunger and StreetVet. Proceeds are transferred directly to the organisation once a 5 per cent platform fee and a payment provider fee are deducted. The latter fee ranges from 1.4 per cent of the amount paid plus 20p per transaction to 2.9 per cent plus 20p per transaction, depending on the type of card used.

Buengo co-founder Fela Hughes said: "We’ve spoken to so many people that want to know where the money they donate to charity goes, so that’s been in the forefront of our minds when developing the app. Virtual items makes donations more tangible and makes it possible for any charity to start selling things to raise money on Buengo."
