Call for clarity on campaign guide

Indira Das-Gupta

The Sheila McKechnie Foundation and People & Planet are calling for the clarification of Charity Commission guidelines on campaigning.

The organisations believe existing guidelines have caused confusion, so they have launched an online survey to discover if other NGOs feel the same.

A statement issued by them reads: "The current guidance has failed to lift a climate of uncertainty on this issue. It is smaller charities, for which campaigning is a central part of their identity, that suffer.

"There is a risk that this uncertainty will shackle established charities and stifle the emergence of new ones."

The organisations believe campaigns such as Make Poverty History and Drop the Debt illustrate that there is support for NGOs to engage in such activity. However, they take the view that there are still too many constraints on their ability to implement such campaigns.
