Campaign for community bank holiday stepped up

Voluntary organisations and the Trades Union Congress have said they would like a Monday at the end of October to be set aside as a 'community day' bank holiday.

Umbrella bodies the NCVO and Navca and the charities CSV and Volunteering England have joined the TUC to call for the introduction of a day to celebrate community involvement.

They chose Monday this week - the date on which the bank holiday would have fallen this year - to step up their campaign by adding interactive features onto their website communityday.org. Visitors can post suggestions on what they would like to do on their new bank holiday and email MPs to seek their support.

"Politicians are always waxing lyrical about the contribution that voluntary groups make to society," said Brendan Barber, general secretary of the TUC. "So why not recognise their work by backing the campaign?"
