Cancer charities continue to be the most popular with the public, the latest research indicates.

The consultancy nfpSynergy asked 1,000 people what category their favourite charities fell into, such as UK armed forces or hospices, with respondents able to select more than one from a list.

The results show that cancer charities continue to hold the top spot in the annual survey by a considerable margin, being selected by 48 per cent of respondents this year. Animal charities are second on 34 per cent, with children and young people in third place on 29 per cent.

Researchers said children and young people had fallen from second place for the first time in the past six years.

Hospices and health and medical, excluding cancer, complete the top five, the make-up of which has remained unchanged since 2010.

The research indicates that support for homelessness and social welfare causes has increased over the past 10 years, rising from 12 per cent in 2007 to 16 per cent this year.

This could be linked to increased media coverage of food waste and hunger, and a rise in homelessness since 2010, nfpSynergy said.

Researchers found that older people were more likely to have a favourite charity than younger respondents, and young people were more likely to favour homelessness and social welfare causes than older generations.

NfpSynergy said that despite being in third place in terms of public popularity, children and young people’s charities attracted the most individual donations, ahead of medical research.
