Charities are being invited to attend a free event that marks the UK launch of a European initiative to promote better opportunities for older people.
The European Union has designated 2012 as the European Year of Active Ageing and Solidarity Between Generations. It follows last year’s Year of Volunteering.
About 100 delegates are expected to attend the Get Involved! event at Europe House, London. It is one of a series of events taking place across the EU to begin the year.
The initiative has been set up to encourage organisations and policymakers to do more to help older people in areas such as employment, health and housing.
Cross-bench peer Baroness Greengross, former director-general of Age Concern England, will be among the speakers.
The charity Age UK will discuss its recent campaign to encourage physical activity amongst older people and a representative from the NHS will talk about new developments in health services.
The Department for Work and Pensions is promoting the initiative in the UK.
Organisations are invited to register their interest in attending by the end of today to UK coordinator Jo Corkett at EY.2012@DWP.GSI.GOV.UK.
