Charities refuse proceeds of DVD

Two women's charities have refused to accept donations from sales of a DVD on domestic violence.

Refuge at first supported the production of Paul Atherton's docudrama Silent Voices by allowing the cast to visit one of its refuges and providing rehearsal space.

Various groups asked for copies of Silent Voices after it was shown on the Community Channel. Atherton decided to sell it on DVD and offer the proceeds to Refuge. But the charity refused to accept the money, as did Women's Aid. It is believed the two charities were not happy with the content.

Atherton said bureaucracy had become more important than helping beneficiaries. "I find that abhorrent," he said.

Refuge and Women's Aid declined to comment. The National Centre for Domestic Violence has since accepted the donation.
