Charity shops form alliance to stop thieves

Charity shops in an Essex town have banded together in a bid to beat thieves.

The 17 town centre charity shops in Colchester have formed an alliance to share information on pickpockets who target elderly customers.

The shops will call and warn each other of suspicious behaviour and repeat offenders, and will meet regularly to discuss what measures need to be taken.

They will also liaise with the town’s crime reduction officer and have proposed that shops release staff members as special constables to help police the town centre.

Irena Kanafoyska, manager of the town’s St Helena Hospice shop, said the idea was “very powerful”.

“Once we have all pulled together, sharing information, there will be nowhere for the thieves to go,” she said.
