Charity urged to take shoot cash

Pheasant shooter Barry Atkinson has written to the chairman of the Institute of Cancer Research's trustees, Lord Farringdon, asking him to intervene in the row over the charity's refusal to accept his £30,000 donation.

The institute turned down Atkinson's gift because it "recognises the necessity of minimising pain and suffering in animals" (Third Sector, 30 March). Cancer Research UK and Macmillan Cancer Relief said they would have accepted the money.

The field sports enthusiast has branded the decision as "ridiculous" and hopes the trustees will reconsider.
