The chief executive of the health charity Nuffield Health received a bonus of more than £300,000 that took his pay to more than £840,000 last year, the charity’s latest accounts show.
The accounts for the year to 31 December 2018, filed with Companies House this week, show that the highest earner at the charity was on between £840,000 and £849,000.
A spokesman for the charity confirmed that the recipient of the wage was its chief executive, Steve Gray.
The year before, Gray was paid between £510,000 and £519,999, so his salary was about £330,000 higher in 2018 than in 2017.
The spokesman said the increase was due to a bonus made available to the chief executive for high performance.
"In 2017, the charity did not meet the criteria for the chief executive to earn a bonus," he said. "The significant improvement in business performance and achievement of strategic objectives in 2018 means that Steve qualified for a bonus.
"This accounts for the increase in his remuneration and reflects the progress the charity made last year under his leadership."
The salary would be the third highest in the sector when compared with others on Third Sector’s 2019 charity pay study.
The accounts show that the number of staff earning more than £60,000 a year increased from 342 to 413.
The charity had a turnover of £945.8m, up from £909.1m in 2017, and spent £887.1m in 2018, an increase of almost £16m on the previous year.
The charity reached more than 1.5 million people and carried out 211,000 hospital procedures, the accounts say.
Redundancy payments were at less than £1m and were included in a total of £2.9m spent on a number of major transformation projects to "support the future success and financial sustainability of the charity".
