Childline launched its first UK-wide volunteer recruitment campaign on Monday by sending out 10,000 postcards and posters featuring endorsements from existing volunteers.
The campaign, entitled 'Whatever you do, you can do this too', aims to recruit 700 volunteers in six months to supplement 1,416 current volunteers, who mainly work as child counsellors. It wants 200 of the new volunteers to help the 100 or so who work in administration, outreach work or fundraising.
The charity used results from its first survey of its current volunteers and drew on their motivations to sell the concept to the wider public.
It found that 96 per cent felt that helping Childline benefited other areas of their lives.
"Volunteers are at the heart of our work and we urgently need more," said Justin Irwin, the charity's national director for England.
