Children's alliance pressures Lib Dems to outlaw smacking

The Children are Unbeatable! alliance is backing a motion for debate at the Liberal Democrat Conference this afternoon that calls for a ban on the physical punishment of children.

The alliance, comprising more than 350 organisations, including NSPCC and Barnardo's, worked with Baroness Joan Walmsley and Paul Burstow MP to secure the slot.

"We are very excited," said Tony Samphier, campaign communications consultant at the alliance. "If the delegates pass the motion it will be a major boost for the campaign."

Other voluntary organisations holding fringe meetings at the conference include NCVO and the Charities Bill Coalition, and a coalition of five equality organisations, including the Disability Rights Commission and Stonewall.
