Coalition calls for commissioner for children in England

A coalition of 126 organisations has secured the support of the Children's Commissioner for Wales to add weight to its call for a similar post to be created for England.

The Children's Rights Alliance for England is the national co-ordinating body of a group of charities that includes Barnardo's, the Children's Society and NCH.

In a report released last week, the alliance claimed that the Government was failing to honour its commitment to the United Nations' Convention on the Rights of the Child by not having an independent children's commissioner.

Peter Clarke, children's commissioner for Wales, spoke at a seminar of the All Parliamentary Group for Children. The group hopes that a Green Paper will include plans for a commissioner.
