Coalition lobbies for smoking ban

The Smokefree Action coalition is attempting to influence next month's free vote on a smoking ban by lobbying all 640 MPs to support complete prohibition in workplaces and enclosed public spaces.

"We will be ensuring every MP gets a big bucketful of letters," said Ian Wilmore, ASH public affairs manager. ASH and fellow coalition member Asthma UK will also present MPs with unpublished smoking prevalence rates, which have been calculated for each Parliamentary constituency and local authority ward.

The coalition is "quietly confident" that MPs will vote in favour of a full ban. But with other amendments proposing various exceptions to a ban, the charities are not taking any chances.
