Commission set to open first office for charities in Wales

The Charity Commission is to open its first office in Wales, the chief charity commissioner announced today.

Wales' 11,000 charities are now regulated in Taunton, Somerset, where the commission's Welsh Charities Unit is based.

The new office, which will open in April next year, will accommodate 12 staff.

The commission's decision follows last year's Strategy Unit report, which recommended the establishment of an office in Wales and the appointment of a charity commissioner by the Secretary of State for Wales. The latter requires primary legislation.

John Stoker, chief charity commissioner, said: "The sector has told us it wants an office in Wales and we are pleased to have the resources to provide it."
