COMMUNICATIONS NEWS: Barnardo's to offer parent programme to Chinese groups

Barnardo's is launching a parenting programme for the Chinese community in Northern Ireland that focuses on the issues encountered by families raising bilingual children.

The charity is working alongside Inner City Belfast Sure Start to target the Chinese community - Northern Ireland's largest ethnic group - with messages about cultural identity, discrimination and discipline.

A leaflet will be distributed to the Chinese community via doctors' surgeries and libraries. Barnardo's also plans to develop training programmes to help Chinese parents form self-help groups.

"Chinese parents have been involved in developing all stages of the programme," said Sarah Tibbs, spokeswoman at Barnardo's Parenting Matters Division.
