COMMUNICATIONS NEWS: Charities join up to produce briefings for world summit

International development charity Care International has teamed up with conservation organisation the WWF to gain extra leverage at the World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg next month.

The two organisations will call for the establishment of global land rights at the summit, tying the issues of social justice and environmental degradation together.

"If people are given rights over their land, rather than forced to move on, they are more likely to maintain it sustainably,

said Sally Nichols, WWF's head of global policy.

The two charities have long collaborated on integrated conservation and development projects in Africa, but have now decided to formalise their advocacy and lobbying work before the summit.

Land rights, natural disasters, and freshwater resources are some of the cross-over issues between the charities, and on which the organisations have produced three briefing papers.

"The whole point of this year's summit is to bring the two strands of poverty reduction and the environment together,

said Kaye Stearman, head of communications for Care International.
