The Citizenship Foundation hired its first PR officer last week to increase the charity's reach beyond schools and into the wider community.
Rebecca Irani becomes the foundation's first designated PR officer since its inception in 1989, when it was founded to campaign for the inclusion of citizenship on the national curriculum.
Her appointment next month signals a stepping up of the charity's work to improve public citizenship.
"My role is to develop the communications and marketing strategy to encourage individuals to become involved in their community through education about big issues such as law, democracy and society," said Irani.
Plans include targeting people through online games, the press and a number of conferences.
