Communications News: Disability coalition formed to increase access grants limit

The Muscular Dystrophy Campaign is forming a coalition with at least five disability and children's charities to lobby the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister to increase the upper limit for household disabled facilities grants.

The charities will band together this month to present a stronger voice to call for an increase in the £25,000 that local authorities are permitted to award disabled people to make their homes accessible.

The amount is considered too small because it can cost up to £80,000 to adapt a house to accommodate an electronically powered wheelchair.

Councils are currently only permitted to offer discretionary amounts above £25,000.

The coalition will also call for an end to means-testing as a qualification route for the grants.
