COMMUNICATIONS NEWS: Liverpool culture is core of Community Channel scheduling

A film by Liverpool Community College that attempts to challenge the negative media image of 'Scousers' forms part of a whole week of programming about the city by the Community Channel, the charity-focused TV station.

The week, intended to celebrate the choice of Liverpool as European City of Culture for 2008, also includes a film which traces the cultural heritage of the city through the eyes of its Chinese, Punjabi and Afro-Caribbean communities.

"The Community Channel has chosen to celebrate the city's community spirit and share it with a UK audience," said a spokesperson for the station.

The channel's main magazine programme, Action Hour, will feature organisations including Liverpool drug addiction charity Dare to Care, and Western Spirit, a charity helping to improve the career prospects of disadvantaged children.

Leon Lopez, who plays Jerome in Liverpool-set soap opera Brookside, will present the programme.

Other slots during the special week of transmission will feature films on the Beatles and other Liverpool musicians, and on local business people.
