Communications News: Lung Foundation to focus on diseases related to smoking

The British Lung Foundation will target GPs with leaflets and posters on 17 November to raise awareness of what it calls "the only major cause of death increasing in the UK".

The information will mark World COPD Day. Incidence of COPD - an umbrella term for chronic bronchitis and emphysema - is particularly high among smokers and ex-smokers whose habit was more than 20 cigarettes a day for 20 years or more.

The foundation has also teamed up with retail chain Superdrug to offer free breathing tests at selected stores.

The charity believes that apart from the 900,000 reported cases, many more remain undiagnosed or incorrectly labelled as asthmatic. It is urging people to visit their local Superdrug store or GP.
