COMMUNICATIONS NEWS: Minorities society organises debate on Islamophobia

Leading figures in the British Muslim community are being brought together today by the Minority Rights Group International (MRG) to debate Islamophobia.

The debate "Action towards equality", which takes place at the House of Commons, comes in the wake of a report commissioned by MRG which revealed Muslims in Britain are increasingly likely to be attacked and find their civil liberties under threat.

Humayum Ansari, author of the report and director of the centre for Ethnic Studies at the University of London, will be joined on a panel that includes Mohibur Rahman, policy adviser at the Muslim Council of Britain, and MP Mohammad Sarwar.

MRG spokesman Graham Fox said: "There is a lot of Islamophobia in the media right now.

"We're bringing together people with a lot of different viewpoints in a Question Time-style format to discuss practical steps that can be taken towards equality.

"It works to our mandate of promoting justice, equality and understanding among communities."
