Shelter has linked up with Bradford & Bingley to publish a free guide to renting and letting, aimed at landlords and the 2.3 million tenant households in Britain. Home from Home is designed to help people who rent, including 310,000 students, by sharing examples of good practice.
The guide concentrates on the most common agreement for private tenants, which is called an assured shorthold tenancy. "We always stress the importance of open communication between landlord and tenant from the outset to avoid problems escalating," said Adam Sampson, the charity's chief executive.
"It needs to be based on the understanding that it is the landlord's property but the tenant's home." Copies of the guide are available from Shelter.
