COMMUNICATIONS NEWS: NCH highlights how children are bullied by phone or online

Children's charity NCH wants internet service providers and mobile phone companies to take more responsibility for helping children who are bullied online or through their mobile phones.

One in four children are the victims of online bullying, according to research commissioned by the charity. Schools should amend their bullying policies to educate teachers and children about text and online abuse, says NCH.

The charity is carving out a campaigning niche around virtual bullying, in contrast to other children's charities that focus on playground bullying or within the family, said John Carr, associate director of NCH's Children and Technology Unit.

The research ties in with NCH's "IT OK

campaign, which seeks to increase poorer children's access to technology.

NCH has pushed for tighter sentencing for internet paedophiles, and is part of the coalition of children's charities that are co-ordinating with the Government's internet task force.
