COMMUNICATIONS NEWS: Princess Diana fund supports group for prisoners' families

Renamed charity Action for Prisoners' Families has joined up with the Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Fund to bolster support available to offenders' families.

Speaking at the charity's annual general meeting last week, the fund's chief executive Dr Andrew Purkis called on the Government to recognise the vital role that prisoners' families play.

"Strong family networks are such a hugely important influence in discouraging crime and in reducing re-offending," said Purkis. "Why on earth do we seem to be so keen on punishing prisoners' families and making it so difficult to maintain those ties?"

At the meeting the charity officially dropped its former name the Federation of Prisoners' Families Support Groups, and is poised to unveil new literature.

With support from entrepreneurial music retailer Julian Ritcher's Persula Fund, new leaflets are being produced as well as new membership fliers to boost the number of lawyers, prison officers and health visitors who support the charity.
