COMMUNICATIONS NEWS: Umbrella body acts to improve trust of advocacy charities

An umbrella organisation representing more than 200 charities is launching a campaign to dispel mistrust of voluntary sector advocacy work among staff in public service fields.

As part of the initiative, Advocacy Across London is putting together a resource pack to help advocacy charities and groups promote better understanding of their work.

"We've found that advocacy work is still widely misunderstood and distrusted among statutory and health workers, who see the work of advocacy charities as a threat to their jobs," said Karen Mellany, development officer at Advocacy Across London.

"At a time when the work of advocacy charities is increasingly featured in legislation, organisations must take a proactive approach when promoting the relevance of their work."

The pack contains a directory of media resources, information and advice on how to run events, and promotional postcards. Organisations interested in receiving the resource pack should email info@advocacyacrosslondon.org.uk.

The group will also send information packs to public sector employees.
