Communications News: VSO launches prize competition in bid to boost volunteers

International development charity VSO has launched its first viral email competition, with a trip to Kenya as the prize, in an effort to motivate entrants to volunteer overseas.

The quiz was launched with its own microsite on VSO's main site last week. It asks readers to nominate four friends to receive an email from VSO which asks them, as a team, to answer eight questions about its overseas volunteer programmes and countries where it operates.

Laura Solomon, VSO's communications manager, said it wants 2,000 team entries to the game, designed "to reflect the way in which our volunteers work".

Felix Velarde, co-founder of digital marketers Underwired, which provided technical expertise, said he believes this is the first time any charity has run a competition that requires a team response.

The main prize includes a trip on a Kenyan eco-safari and the chance to meet VSO volunteers.
