COMMUNICATIONS NEWS: Whitbread sets up online calendar of charity campaigns

Whitbread, the hotel and leisure conglomerate, has set up a website to broaden people's knowledge of charity campaigns.

The website,, is targeting schools, public sector professionals, journalists, fundraisers and charities. Launched at the beginning of September, it is the UK's first free daily listing of UK charity campaigns and replaces the two printed Whitbread-sponsored calendars, which delivered charity campaign information to more than 7,000 secondary schools and media contacts.

Site editor Gareth Jenkins said the online version is much more flexible and accessible than its print predecessor. Every charity has been allocated its own campaign page, which can be constantly updated, and there are links enabling users to access additional information.

Jenkins says the site will also be used by charities to monitor each other's activities and help them to plan when it would be best to launch their own campaigns.

Whitbread, which is not taking any income from the calendar, is using the website to highlight its community involvement.
