Community Fund to quiz Blunkett over refugee grant block

The Community Fund has requested a meeting with Home Secretary David Blunkett to discuss his objection to a grant for a group campaigning against the deportation of asylum seekers.

In an unprecedented move for a government minister, Blunkett last week raised "serious concerns

about the £340,000 grant to the National Coalition of Anti-Deportation Campaigns.

In a statement made jointly with Culture Secretary Tessa Jowell, he questioned whether the group's activities were lawful and alleged that it engaged in political activities which made it ineligible for lottery funding.

The Community Fund's head of public affairs Boni Sones said: "We take the allegations very seriously, but we are not aware at the moment of any reason why we should not fund the the coalition.
