Transferring the management of public services from local authorities to the community sector could damage their quality, a report has said.
The survey entitled It Takes Two to Tango from the Development Trusts Association, the Local Government Association and the New Economics Foundation, argues that the Government should tread carefully when it comes to community enterprise involvement in public service delivery.
According to the report, unless the programme of transferring services to the community sector has the backing of local residents, ensures secure jobs for workers and maintains a healthy relationship with other sectors, the results could be counterproductive.
"If programmes designed to transfer services cannot provide assurances in such areas, then in the medium to long term the quality of the public services are likely to deteriorate rather than improve,
the report said.
