Compact improves council and charity sector relationship

Relations between local authorities and the voluntary sector have improved in close to half of areas that have a Compact or are in the process of developing one, according to the first Compact annual report to Parliament.

The Compact, which sets out the terms of the relationship between government and the voluntary sector, is making progress, the report claims.

Of voluntary groups in "Compact-active" areas, 42 per cent reported a more fruitful relationship with their local council over the past year compared with just 6 per cent in areas without such an agreement. So far 18 per cent of local authority areas have now published a Compact with a further 42 per cent developing one.
