Crohn’s and Colitis UK has appointed David Barker as chief executive.

Barker, former director of marketing and communications at Breakthrough Breast Cancer, will take up the new position on 18 February.

He replaces Richard Driscoll, who leaves to become a voluntary sector consultant after 21 years at the charity, which supports people affected by inflammatory bowel disease, of which Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis are the most common forms.

Barker was previously head of the British Heart Foundation’s marketing and communications team.

"You don’t see many marketing people moving into chief executive roles, but marketing practitioners, because of the nature of what they do, are really well-placed for leadership", he said.

Barker said he was attracted to the role because inflammatory bowel disease is a condition that people do not talk about, though sufferers are increasingly beginning to discuss their condition.
